“Bear fruits worthy of repentance.”
— Luke 3:8
Many people feel confused about penance in confession.
Some think:
- “My penance should equal my sin.”
- “Why does the priest give the same penance for different sins?”
- “If my sin is serious, why is my penance so small?”
These questions are very common.
To understand this properly, we need to see what the Church really teaches.
🌿 1) Penance Is Not the Same as Sin
In the Sacrament of Confession, two important things happen:
✝️ 1. You receive absolution
Your sins are truly forgiven.
🌿 2. You receive penance
A small act given by the priest.
These are not the same.
Penance is not a payment equal to your sin.
It is something very different.
✝️ 2) What Penance Really Is
Penance is the remedy given after forgiveness.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that after absolution, there are still effects of sin that need healing (CCC 1459–1460).
Sin leaves behind:
- wounds in the heart
- unhealthy habits
- damage to relationships
- a weakening of love
Penance helps to:
- repair the harm
- heal the heart
- strengthen new habits of grace
So penance is:
not punishment, but healing
🔥 3) Why Penance Is Not “Equal” to Sin
Many people think:
“If my sin is big, my penance should also be big.”
But this is not how the Church understands it.
Why?
Because:
Jesus has already paid the full price for sin on the Cross
No human act can “equal” sin or repay it.
So penance is not about:
- balancing a scale
- paying a debt fully
Instead, it is about:
cooperating with God’s healing grace
🌿 4) Why Priests Give Small Penance
This is one of the most misunderstood points.
Sometimes a priest gives:
- 1 Our Father
- 1 Hail Mary
- a short prayer
And people feel:
“This is too small… my sin was serious.”
But the priest is not measuring your sin like a judge.
He is acting like:
a spiritual doctor
A doctor does not give a heavy medicine always —
he gives what is right and helpful for healing.
Penance is meant to be:
- possible (you can actually do it)
- meaningful
- helpful for your spiritual growth
Sometimes simple penance is better, because:
it helps you begin again gently, without discouragement
✝️ 5) Why Sometimes the Same Penance Is Given
You may notice:
different people receive the same penance
This is not because all sins are the same.
It is because:
- the priest is guiding many people
- he gives simple, practical, universal acts
- he focuses on helping you return to God, not calculating punishment
Also, the most important part of confession is:
God’s mercy in absolution, not the size of the penance
🌱 6) What Penance Is Meant to Do
Penance has a deeper purpose:
It helps you:
- grow in humility
- repair your relationship with God
- begin new habits
- turn away from sin more strongly
As the Catechism says, it helps us:
“re-establish habits befitting a disciple of Christ” (CCC 1459)
🙏 7) How to Do Your Penance Well
When you receive penance:
Do it with:
- attention
- prayer
- sincerity
Not as:
a small task to finish quickly
But as:
a moment of grace and healing
Even a simple prayer, if done with love, becomes powerful.
✨ Final Understanding
Penance is not equal to sin.
It is a step toward healing.
Confession is not about:
- paying back God
It is about:
returning to the Father and allowing Him to heal us
🙏 Short Prayer
Lord Jesus,
help me to understand Your mercy more deeply.
Teach me to receive forgiveness with trust
and to carry out my penance with love.
Heal my heart and lead me to true conversion.
Amen.
