Life in Abundance: What the World Gives and What Christ Offers
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today the Church celebrates Good Shepherd Sunday.
On this beautiful day, Jesus gives us one of His most meaningful promises:
“I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)
When we hear this, a question naturally arises:
What kind of life is Jesus speaking about?
Because when we look around, it seems that life already offers many good things.
The world can give us comfort, opportunities, experiences, and success.
In many ways, we have more than ever before.
And yet, something is still missing.
Even with so much, many people carry a quiet restlessness—
a sense that something is not complete.
As Saint Augustine of Hippo reminds us:
“Our hearts are restless until they rest in God.”
This restlessness is not because the world is bad.
The world can give many good things.
But the truth is, those good things are limited.
They can satisfy us for a time,
but they cannot fully satisfy the deeper longing of the human heart.
And this is where Jesus reveals Himself as the Good Shepherd.
The Good Shepherd does not only guide His sheep.
He leads them to life.
Not just a safe life,
not just a comfortable life,
but a full life.
Jesus says in another place:
“I know my sheep, and my sheep know me” (John 10:14).
This means we are not strangers to Him.
We are known, loved, and called personally.
Dear brothers and sisters,
This is the difference:
The life the world gives is something we use.
But the life the Good Shepherd gives is something that transforms us from within.
It is a life that:
- brings peace even in uncertainty
- gives meaning beyond circumstances
- strengthens us in suffering
- and quietly leads us toward something eternal
This is what the Church teaches us—
that through grace, we share in the very life of God.
The Good Shepherd not only leads us—
He gives His life for us.
That is the heart of this Sunday.
Jesus says:
“The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11)
This is why the life He gives is not temporary.
It is a life rooted in love,
a life sustained by grace,
a life that continues to grow within us.
Dear friends,
Good Shepherd Sunday reminds us of something very beautiful:
We are not left alone to search for meaning in life.
We are led.
And the one who leads us is not a stranger,
but a Shepherd who:
- knows us
- walks with us
- cares for us
- and desires that we live fully
So today, let us ask ourselves:
Am I listening to the voice of the Good Shepherd?
Am I allowing Him to lead my life?
Because fullness of life comes not from having many things,
but from following the One who gives life.
So today, let us receive again His promise:
“I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”
A life that grows within us,
a life that leads us to God,
a life that the world cannot give
and cannot take away.
Amen.
The world can offer much, but only Christ can give a life that never fades.
